The protest was sparked by the rise of support for the right-wing One Nation party, created by Pauline Hanson in 1997. Influenced by American politics and an increase in racism within Australian society, One Nation used divisive political language and actions to become an alternative to the major political parties. In response, the WA Greens and WA Socialists created a protest in Midland.
The protest begun at 5:30pm in anticipation for the arrival of Pauline Hanson at the Crooked Spire Cafe, we're she held a rally for supporters willing to pay $70 per ticket. During the protest, speeches were delivered by multiple known political figures or activist, including; Alevine Magila, rally chair and WA Socialist member; Oskar Martin, Bundjalung and Kamilaroi man, and socialist activist; Sophie McNeill, Greens MP in WA; and Dr Mohammed Mustafa, ER Doctor and humanitarian.
